Skerton Grassroots

Team Northwest had six young boxers competing at the Skerton Grassroots tournament held in Morecambe on Saturday. The team travelled down to Morecambe on Friday night in the clubs new minibus which the boys all enjoyed, team spirit is now central to Northwest's success.

First in the ring for Northwest was Leon Roberts against K.Moore from Bridgewater ABC in Manchester. Leon boxed superbly working off his rhythm & keeping the pressure on his opponent. Leon was unfortunately beaten on points.

Next up was Paul Hope representing Northwest against the heavier opponent of B.Grimshaw from Leigh ABC in Lancaster. Paul again working off the rhythm moved round the ring well and made good use of his Jab following up with some nice combinations, proving speed & power is a winning combination. Paul was announced winner on majority points.

Kieran McMaster was Northwest's 3rd boxer to enter the ring. Kieran was competing against B.Beswick of Skerton ABC in Lancaster. B.Beswick is ranked No3 in England! Kieran made great use of his hand speed & kept constant pressure on Beswick & prevented his opponent dictating the tempo of the bout. Kierans fitness & determination payed off and was the deserved majority points winner.

Dylan Nixon represented Northwest against N.Fielding of Skerton ABC in Lancaster. Dylan had the height advantage over his opponent and again made good use of the jab. This bout was a battle from the off and Dylan had to dig deep to secure the majority points win.

The first bout after the break was Robert McGinney of Northwest ABC against C.Pierce of Leigh ABC in Lancaster. Robert kept his gaurd tight & used his reach extremely well to force his opponent into the corner on several occasions. Robert produced a great performance but was unfortunately beaten on points.

Last bout of the day for Northwest ABC was Connor Wallace against the larger opponent of R.Mcmillan of Skerton ABC in Lancaster. R.Mcmillan is ranked No8 in england! This was to prove to be a hard fight for Connor giving away both height & weight. Connor used his speed to move round the ring & counter attack. This was another great performance by Connor who was unfortunately beaten on points.

Team Northwest had a GREAT weekend in Morecambe. Well done to all boys involved & many thanks to the parents who travelled & supported the squad.
