Novice Championships

The Novice Championships were held over Sat 30th & Sun 31st in the Timecapsule Coatbridge. Northwest ABC had FIVE entries for this tournament. Craig Best, Jacqueline Ralston, Jason Butcher,Michael Glover & Kyle Sayers. Unfortunately no other entries were present for Craig Best and Jacqueline Ralston who missed their opportunity to compete.
This was Jason Butchers first competitive bout, adding to this pressure was the the size of the crowd present. Unfortunately Jason sustained a heavy body blow & injuries to his ribs. RSC. Jason knows what level is required & will come back stronger & more determined for the future.

Michael Glover competed in the final's of the 1994 66kg class. Michael had been carrying a niggling injury for some time that came back to bight him in round one. Due to a hand injury Michael failed to continue after round one.

Kyle Sayers was gloved up,head gaurd on and ready to enter ring one, when it was announced that there would be no more contest!!!! Kyle and his opponent had weighed in at 9am on Saturday, both boxers were then told they would not compete until the sunday. Then to wait until 7PM on the Sunday and told you would not be competing at all was a major blow to both boxers. Hopefully this bout will be re-arranged for a show in the near future.

TEAM NORTHWEST WILL RE-GROUP & RETURN STRONGER THAN EVER !!!

Scotland Select v England Select

Connor Wallace represented Northwest ABC at the recent Scotland select v England select show. The nights boxing was hosted by Queensferry ABC in the Corn Exchange Edinburgh.
This was a black tie event with tickets costing £100 each. There was a Scottish piper on the door to welcome all the boxers, officials & guests into the event.
Connor was up against the quality opposition of Billy Beer from Repton ABC in London.
B.Beer is ranked No1 in the ABA of England official rankings in his age category!
Connor was giving away nearly 2kg in weight, and also a substantial height & reach advantage. This (as always) did not deter Connor who entered the ring with 100% commitment.
The bout turned out to be a battle from the 1st to last bell. Unfortunately Connor was beaten on points in this contest.
Northwest coaches are proud of Connors performance on the night against one of the best opponents around. Connor can hold his head high after this bout & has learnt some important lessons that he can carry forward into future contests.
Well done Connor!!

Northwest Dinner Show

Northwest ABC held their annual boxing dinner show in The Park Hotel on Saturday 24th April sponsored by A1 Collision. The night was a great success with 24 boxers displaying their skills in the ring whilst watched by some 250 spectators.

The first bout of the evening was 12yr old Leon Roberts representing Northwest ABC and William McLean of Irvine Vineburgh ABC.This was a close fought contest over three x 1.5minute rounds. Leon made good use of his jab which resulted in William sustaining a blooded nose in round two where the referee had to pause the contest for his nose to be checked. Both boxers worked endlessly & gave it their all in this close fought contest with William being the eventual winner on points.

In the second contest of the evening were 14yr olds Robert McGinney of Northwest ABC and Connor Hyslop of Dennistoun ABC. Robert tried to make use of his long reach & keep his opponent at distance. Unfortunately this tactic didn’t work for Robert where Connor proved to be the faster & stronger boxer on the night, forcing the referee to stop the bout. Robert has learnt a lot from this contest & will come back better & stronger for the future.

Northwest’s third boxer of the evening was 14yr old Craig Best competing against Lewis Greechan of Cleland ABC. Both boxers had previously only had one bout each, not that you would have known with the standard of boxing on display. Craig was producing some superb combinations & made great use of his uppercut to catch Lewis out. After three rounds Craig was declared the winner. Craig has impressed Northwest ABC coaches with his attitude & work ethic in only a relatively short time in Amateur Boxing. One too watch out for in the future.

Kieran McMaster was Northwest’s fourth boxer of the evening. 13yr old Kieran was competing against Chris Bradley of Lochaber Phoenix ABC. Kieran was mentally and physically ready and had trained hard in the run up to the bout. Both boxers got off to a flying start in round one with neither boxer willing to give up their area. Kieran used his superb hand speed to take the contest to his opponent & caught Chris with some nice hooks in the process. Kieran, boxing off his rhythm, pressurised Chris for the full three rounds and was declared the winner on points.

Next to represent Northwest ABC was 14yr old Connor Wallace competing against Stephen Boyle of Dennistoun ABC. Stephen was a finalist in this year’s Scottish Championships, so this was going to be no easy bout for Connor. The work rate of both boxers was 2nd to none, with Connors determination being evident. Both young boxers traded punches in the centre of the ring. Connor again working well of his rhythm used his speed & power magnificently to be announced winner after three hard fought rounds.

The last bout of the evening before the interval was to prove to be a cracker between 14yr olds Paul Hope of Northwest ABC and Wullie Nightingale of Irvine Vineburgh ABC. The intent was evident on both young boxers faces as they squared up in the ring before the first round. Wullie was the more experienced boxer but Paul wasn’t fazed at all and was prepared for a battle. As anticipated both boxers gave their all in the ring, Paul used his power and determination to give Wullie a good contest, but Wullies ring experience and ability to throw punches from some un-orthodox angles gained him the points win.

The last bout of the evening was a contest between Northwest’s David McPike, (current 1992 75kg Scottish Intermediate Champion & 1992 75kg Scottish Junior Champion) and Mike Atkinson of Renfrewshire ABC. This was David’s first bout against an opponent from the senior category. Both boxers entered the ring to the biggest cheer of the evening. Unfortunately David wasn’t up to his usual standard & after being caught by some clean shots from Mike the referee stepped in & stopped the contest. Mike gave a quality display on how both power & hand speed can & will produce the win. Northwest coaches & all who know David know he can produce a far superior performance than he did on the night. David will bounce back more determined than ever after this.

Best young boxer of the evening went to Kieran McMaster of Northwest ABC
Best senior boxer of the evening went to Mike Atkinson of Renfrewshire ABC

Northwest ABC would like to thank the clubs sponsor, A1 Collision of Kilmarnock, without the funding A1 Collision invests in the club these evenings wouldn’t be possible.

Skerton Grassroots

Team Northwest had six young boxers competing at the Skerton Grassroots tournament held in Morecambe on Saturday. The team travelled down to Morecambe on Friday night in the clubs new minibus which the boys all enjoyed, team spirit is now central to Northwest's success.

First in the ring for Northwest was Leon Roberts against K.Moore from Bridgewater ABC in Manchester. Leon boxed superbly working off his rhythm & keeping the pressure on his opponent. Leon was unfortunately beaten on points.

Next up was Paul Hope representing Northwest against the heavier opponent of B.Grimshaw from Leigh ABC in Lancaster. Paul again working off the rhythm moved round the ring well and made good use of his Jab following up with some nice combinations, proving speed & power is a winning combination. Paul was announced winner on majority points.

Kieran McMaster was Northwest's 3rd boxer to enter the ring. Kieran was competing against B.Beswick of Skerton ABC in Lancaster. B.Beswick is ranked No3 in England! Kieran made great use of his hand speed & kept constant pressure on Beswick & prevented his opponent dictating the tempo of the bout. Kierans fitness & determination payed off and was the deserved majority points winner.

Dylan Nixon represented Northwest against N.Fielding of Skerton ABC in Lancaster. Dylan had the height advantage over his opponent and again made good use of the jab. This bout was a battle from the off and Dylan had to dig deep to secure the majority points win.

The first bout after the break was Robert McGinney of Northwest ABC against C.Pierce of Leigh ABC in Lancaster. Robert kept his gaurd tight & used his reach extremely well to force his opponent into the corner on several occasions. Robert produced a great performance but was unfortunately beaten on points.

Last bout of the day for Northwest ABC was Connor Wallace against the larger opponent of R.Mcmillan of Skerton ABC in Lancaster. R.Mcmillan is ranked No8 in england! This was to prove to be a hard fight for Connor giving away both height & weight. Connor used his speed to move round the ring & counter attack. This was another great performance by Connor who was unfortunately beaten on points.

Team Northwest had a GREAT weekend in Morecambe. Well done to all boys involved & many thanks to the parents who travelled & supported the squad.
