Northwest Dinner Show

Northwest ABC held their annual boxing dinner show in The Park Hotel on Saturday 24th April sponsored by A1 Collision. The night was a great success with 24 boxers displaying their skills in the ring whilst watched by some 250 spectators.

The first bout of the evening was 12yr old Leon Roberts representing Northwest ABC and William McLean of Irvine Vineburgh ABC.This was a close fought contest over three x 1.5minute rounds. Leon made good use of his jab which resulted in William sustaining a blooded nose in round two where the referee had to pause the contest for his nose to be checked. Both boxers worked endlessly & gave it their all in this close fought contest with William being the eventual winner on points.

In the second contest of the evening were 14yr olds Robert McGinney of Northwest ABC and Connor Hyslop of Dennistoun ABC. Robert tried to make use of his long reach & keep his opponent at distance. Unfortunately this tactic didn’t work for Robert where Connor proved to be the faster & stronger boxer on the night, forcing the referee to stop the bout. Robert has learnt a lot from this contest & will come back better & stronger for the future.

Northwest’s third boxer of the evening was 14yr old Craig Best competing against Lewis Greechan of Cleland ABC. Both boxers had previously only had one bout each, not that you would have known with the standard of boxing on display. Craig was producing some superb combinations & made great use of his uppercut to catch Lewis out. After three rounds Craig was declared the winner. Craig has impressed Northwest ABC coaches with his attitude & work ethic in only a relatively short time in Amateur Boxing. One too watch out for in the future.

Kieran McMaster was Northwest’s fourth boxer of the evening. 13yr old Kieran was competing against Chris Bradley of Lochaber Phoenix ABC. Kieran was mentally and physically ready and had trained hard in the run up to the bout. Both boxers got off to a flying start in round one with neither boxer willing to give up their area. Kieran used his superb hand speed to take the contest to his opponent & caught Chris with some nice hooks in the process. Kieran, boxing off his rhythm, pressurised Chris for the full three rounds and was declared the winner on points.

Next to represent Northwest ABC was 14yr old Connor Wallace competing against Stephen Boyle of Dennistoun ABC. Stephen was a finalist in this year’s Scottish Championships, so this was going to be no easy bout for Connor. The work rate of both boxers was 2nd to none, with Connors determination being evident. Both young boxers traded punches in the centre of the ring. Connor again working well of his rhythm used his speed & power magnificently to be announced winner after three hard fought rounds.

The last bout of the evening before the interval was to prove to be a cracker between 14yr olds Paul Hope of Northwest ABC and Wullie Nightingale of Irvine Vineburgh ABC. The intent was evident on both young boxers faces as they squared up in the ring before the first round. Wullie was the more experienced boxer but Paul wasn’t fazed at all and was prepared for a battle. As anticipated both boxers gave their all in the ring, Paul used his power and determination to give Wullie a good contest, but Wullies ring experience and ability to throw punches from some un-orthodox angles gained him the points win.

The last bout of the evening was a contest between Northwest’s David McPike, (current 1992 75kg Scottish Intermediate Champion & 1992 75kg Scottish Junior Champion) and Mike Atkinson of Renfrewshire ABC. This was David’s first bout against an opponent from the senior category. Both boxers entered the ring to the biggest cheer of the evening. Unfortunately David wasn’t up to his usual standard & after being caught by some clean shots from Mike the referee stepped in & stopped the contest. Mike gave a quality display on how both power & hand speed can & will produce the win. Northwest coaches & all who know David know he can produce a far superior performance than he did on the night. David will bounce back more determined than ever after this.

Best young boxer of the evening went to Kieran McMaster of Northwest ABC
Best senior boxer of the evening went to Mike Atkinson of Renfrewshire ABC

Northwest ABC would like to thank the clubs sponsor, A1 Collision of Kilmarnock, without the funding A1 Collision invests in the club these evenings wouldn’t be possible.
